Day 1: Setting the Stage
Our expedition begins as we depart from Cusco at 8:30 am. From here, we begin venturing south for a three-hour drive until we reach the bustling market of the Tinki community. Once we arrive, we procure the necessary supplies for our trek before continuing on the road for an additional hour to reach the Upis community.
However, before arriving at the Upis base camp, lunch awaits us at Paulina’s house, providing a taste of local hospitality. Post-lunch, our trek officially begins as we hike for three hours to reach the Upis base camp, laying the foundation for the days ahead.
Day 2: Ascent to Anantapata
In the early morning, we gather at Domingo’s house for a substantial breakfast before kicking off our journey towards Anantapata. Along the way, we pass by the calm Pocacocha lagoon, providing a quiet spot to take a break, have a box lunch, and recharge for the upcoming climb to the Pocacocha pass at 4800m.
The ascent isn’t just about physical endurance; it’s a practical immersion into the Andean landscape. After reaching the pass, we descended to the base camp of Anantapata, where we set up camp for the night. Surrounded by the rugged terrain of the Andes, the evening brings a simple yet profound connection with the natural world under the expansive night sky. Top of Form
Day 3: Rainbow Mountain and Ausangate Lagoon
As the first light breaks, we kick off our trek towards Rainbow Mountain and through the Red Valley, ushering in a new day of exploration. Once we complete this circuit, we return to Anantapata, taking a pause for a practical energy-rich lunch to refuel.
Following this, we move forward to the highlight of our journey – the “Ausangate Lagoon.” Here, we establish our camp for the night, preparing for a well-rounded experience at this significant point in our trek.
Day 4: Summiting Ausangate Pass
A breakfast against the backdrop of the Ausangate lagoon at 4800m precedes our ascent to the pinnacle of our trek, the Ausangate pass at 5200m. The hike is challenging, however the breathtaking views will be worth the struggle. After conquering the pass, we descend to Rosapata, where we camp for the night, surrounded by the majestic view of the three peaks.
Day 5: Journey to Pacchanta
Our trek continues to Pacchanta, where the highlight is the rejuvenating thermal baths. The day’s highest point, the Hampa pass at 4800m, treats us to vistas of wild alpacas that roam freely in the Ausangate National Park.
Upon reaching Pacchanta, an evening of relaxation awaits in the hot springs, followed by a delightful dinner at Lidia’s before concluding our adventure with a return to Cusco. Here we get to truly experience the transformative beauty of Ausangate, where every step echoes the spirit of the Andes.
