Day 1: Starting the Journey From Cusco
Our journey kicks off at 8:00 am as we depart from Cusco. We venture north for approximately four hours to reach the starting point in the welcoming community of Capulyoc. Here, lunch at Gladys’s house introduces us to the warmth of local hospitality, providing a fitting prelude to the upcoming trek.
By 3:00 pm, we set our sights towards Chiquisca, a three-hour hike that unfolds the first glimpses of the rugged beauty of the Andes. As the day winds down, we find ourselves at Melchora’s house, the ideal spot for dinner and a well-deserved night’s rest.
Day 2: Hiking Toward Marampata
Our second day begins at 7:00 a.m. with a hearty breakfast at Melchora’s. Once we are filled and fuled, we begin our trek toward Marampata. After a three- to four-hour descent to the Rosalina bridge and the ascent back up, we stop in Santa Rosa for lunch and a taste of the simple local way of life.
After a dinner full of laughter, gratitude, and excitement for the next day, we attempt to get back on the road so that we can make it to Maribel’s house in Marampata by 6:00 pm, where we will rest up for our next hike.
Day 3: Discovering Choquequirao
Today is an exploration day at Choquequirao, an archaeological marvel steeped in history. We arrive at the site early in the morning after a two-hour trek from Marampata. From there, we ascend to the Choquequirao pass at 3400m after a thorough exploration and a picnic lunch. Once refueled, we then descend to the Punchaynuyoc ruins for our overnight camp, where we prepare for day 4.
Day 4: Descent to Maizal
As we continue our descent from Punchaynuyoc to the White River, the landscape undergoes a dynamic transformation. Navigating the river crossing, we ascend to the welcoming community of Maizal, where we set the stage for the evening by establishing our base camp.
The communal spirit comes alive during dinner, creating an atmosphere of shared experiences against the picture perfect backdrop of the Andean night. As we eat, the moment becomes more than a meal; it becomes a communal celebration, fostering connections that go beyond a physical journey and into a collective mindful adventure.
Day 5: Ascend to Yanama Pass
As our journey towards Machu Picchu unfolds, we ascend to the Yanama pass at 4200m. The hike feels like a challenge but what awaits is worth every step we take along the way. Once we arrive at the Yanama pass, a lunch break is well deserved.
The lunch break at Yanama is a moment filled with joy and excitement. After this enjoyable diversion, a waiting transportation vehicle takes us to Santa Teresa, where we spend the night and have the chance to enrich ourselves in the communities culture.
Day 6: Yactapata and Aguas Calientes
In the early morning, we set out for the Yactapata archaeological site, a destination that promises a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. Following a satisfying lunch, we board the train to Hydroelectric, initiating a leisurely walk to the quaint village of Aguas Calientes, nestled in the shadows of Machu Picchu. After a fulfilling day of sightseeing, it is finally time to unwind in the evening at the welcoming Casa Andina. Here, we enjoy our stay, share stories and laughter, and get a good night’s sleep.
Day 7: Arrival at Machu Picchu
Today represents the end of our journey as we arrive at the iconic Machu Picchu. We start early, arriving at the archaeological center by 6:00 a.m. where we will be embarking on a three-hour guided tour. We return to Aguas Calientes for a leisurely lunch after the insightful exploration, seamlessly transitioning from historical immersion to a moment of relaxation.
Post-lunch, our adventure gracefully draws to a close with a scenic train journey to Ollantaytambo and a concluding bus ride to Cusco. As we end our journey in Machu Picchu, we are left with indelible memories and a profound connection to Peru’s historical and natural wonders.Top of Form
